Tricks and tips to get the best rental experience:
Sticking to your rental home budget:
- Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Reserve your Kitty Hawk rental in the Spring or Fall to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Many management companies supply Kitty Hawk area visitor guide magazines that include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- First and foremost, have your family select the best dates and a budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Frog Hollow-900 ft to beach & 2.2 miles to Duck! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally accessible on booking pages. If not, contact the property owner before reserving your rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Does your family require particular amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
- Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
More considerations for your visit:
- Add the property manager's information to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- During check-in, make note of any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your peaceful home. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are away, just like you would back home.
- Just before checking out, take a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
