Tricks and tips to get the optimal vacation property experience:
Sticking to a budget:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Kitty Hawk. To find the best value, shift your trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, , and greatly reduced traffic.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines contain coupons for local shops and restaurants.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- First and foremost, have your family decide on date ranges and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Dorrell \/ Ships Watch in Duck, NC has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before you reserve the rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- If there's a particular Kitty Hawk beach you long to visit, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or charges might be applied to your invoice.
More tips for your stay:
- Get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your .
- Make a record of any damages to the property at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if there is a dispute.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a excellent vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
