But the real highlight of our bungalow is the rooftop deck, where you can kick back and take in gorgeous ocean vistas while appreciating the laid-back ambiance of the Outer Banks. Our guests have been returning to Serendipity for more than 20 years, and we can't wait to welcome you as our newest repeat visitor. Book your stay with us today and start making memories that will last a lifetime!
If you want to see our guest reviews, we have plenty of reviews on some of the other short term rental sites.
HISTORY: Serendipity bungalow is an important piece of Outer Banks history. This bungalow used to be the station keeper's home for Kitty Hawk Life Saving Station #7. It served as the living quarters for the station keeper and is located right on the Beach Road in Kitty Hawk, NC between milepost 4.0 and 4.5. It is the ideal place if you are looking to relax and have a classic Outer Banks beach home experience. With this bungalow, you are just steps away from the ocean....beach access is about a 200 foot walk to the corner! We have very peaceful neighbors to the left, right, and behind us.
AMENITIES: The bungalow has a master bedroom with master bath, and an additional bedroom to spread out if you like. There is plenty of additional spaces to hang-out....on the rooftop deck, the front deck, the back deck, the screened sun-porch, the back yard, or under the bungalow. There is also an outdoor shower with hot/cold water (Spring to Fall only), washer and dryer, entirely outfitted kitchen (refrigerator, oven, microwave, dishes, pots, pans, and silverware) to make home-cooked meals as well as Nutri-Bullet for cold drinks and a Keurig coffee maker. We also have a laundry room with washer and dryer available for your use.
DOGS: We also have a completely fenced-in backyard and well-behaved dogs are allowed on a case-by-case basis. Sorry, no cats. There will be an additional $75 fee per dog. Guests are responsible to watch over their dog at all times to prevent them from causing damage. Guests are also responsible to pick-up after their dogs.
BEACH GEAR: We also have a modest shed that has beach chairs, a beach umbrella, and assorted beach toys. Please feel complimentary to use them during your stay!
RENTAL AGREEMENT: Please note that when you book your stay with us during a timeframe that is not already booked by another guest, you will receive a Rental Agreement that outlines the home rules in this Vacation Rental By Owner listing, and also indicates that if there is a mandatory evacuation of the island that the guest will receive a refund for any days that they could not use due to the evacuation. Please note that you do NOT have a confirmed reservation with us until we have a completely signed rental agreement.
THINGS FOR GUESTS TO KNOW ABOUT OUR COTTAGE
1. Please note that as this is an older bungalow, and many of the doorways are low.
2. The master bedroom is a good size. The 2nd bedroom is relatively modest, but accommodates a queen bed, vanity, and nightstand.
3. There are no closets in any of the bedrooms, but there are dressers and areas to hang clothes.
4. We appreciate our bungalow, but like any home or place you stay at...it will not be right for everybody. The bungalow is 70+ years old, very clean, full of character, comfort, charm, and history. However, if you are looking for everything to be definitely ideal, no imperfections anywhere, granite counter tops, and bamboo wood floors....then this home would probably not be a good fit for you. Our home is a clean, comfortable, and classic OBX beach bungalow. If your looking to stay in a unique bungalow, in a great beach town, and have a classic Outer Banks beach vacation experience....then this is the bungalow for you.
5. Bring Your Own linens, towels, pillows, shampoo, and soap.

16. Serendipity is NOT for everybody. This is a 70+ year old classic and historic Outer Banks bungalow. We adore our bungalow, but like any home or place you stay at...it will not be right for everybody. The bungalow is clean, full of character, comfort, charm, and history. However, if you are looking for everything to be absolutely ideal, no imperfections anywhere, not a grain of sand in the corners, granite counter tops, and bamboo wood floors, etc...then this home would probably NOT be a good fit for you. The secret phrase to book our beach bungalow is: "Checkout time is 10am". There is a chance you may find some sand behind a table, or a mark on the wall from a guest that stayed with us 20+ years ago. If you have these kinds of expectations that everything is 100% ideal, then Serendipity would not be a good fit for you and there are plenty of other homes that can meet your needs. If your looking to stay in a unique, historic, and clean bungalow, in a great beach town, and have a classic Outer Banks beach vacation experience....then this is the bungalow for you!
17. There is a security video camera in the car port area pointed toward the driveway. The audio on this camera is disabled, but video recording is enabled.
18. CATS: Cats are not allowed. Anyone bringing a cat will incur a minimum of an additional $500 cleaning fee.

Tips for getting the best Kitty Hawk vacation home experience:
Sticking to your spending budget:
- June, July, and August are high season in Kitty Hawk. Book your vacation in the Spring or Fall to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Kitty Hawk vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kitty Hawk area visitor guide magazines which will include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Kitty Hawk area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Planning and choosing yourvacation home:
- Choose your vacation week and max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Serendipity OBX - Oceanside Cottage for Couples and Dog Friendl. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking websites. If not, reach out to the host before booking your rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your trip.
- If there's a particular Kitty Hawk destination you love, keep an eye out for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts charge additional pet fees.
More considerations for your visit:
- Take a copy of the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental.
- At Check-in, document any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many issues.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an excellent resource to find the best local scenic spots.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let burglars ruin your trip.
- Just before checking out, take a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition.
- Leave feedback! Hosts rely on good ratings to propel more reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
