Tips and Tricks to get the best vacation home experience:
When to visit Kitty Hawk & When to book:
- In the Kitty Hawk area, The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved very early. Booking your vacation rental up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental property.
- Summer time is high season in Kitty Hawk. To get the best value, change your vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Owners sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Many rental management companies supply Kitty Hawk area travel guides which often include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Kitty Hawk visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Planning, selecting, and booking the bestrental home:
- To start, have your family agree to a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. The Cotsmur at Ships Watch in Duck, a beautiful 4 bedroom home close to beach has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, email or call the host before you book the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to establish what is optimal for your family.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or could be applied to your invoice.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
More considerations:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Store the host's information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are away, just like you would at home.
- During arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and scan for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a great stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
